Paul Horne’s practice follows three lines of enquiry. The cast works discuss notions of the functional, the dilemmas of interaction and understanding in a gallery environment and the romantic, innocent pleasures of touch.

The three dimensional paintings consider the subversion of two dimensional systems and/or the qualities of form and illusion.

Thirdly Paul has returned to an interest in design and wood working to produce furniture. At present these bodies of work continue in parallel.

Horne has produced a series of bronzes - a progression from the aluminium pieces made on his MA. These casts involve traditional processes and materials and are intended to challenge the viewer to consider the objects as visual and interactive forms.

The latest series of paintings represent a shift in an established group. As well as discussing many old interests the new works push the mechanics of the medium to their limits. The result is a group of paintings that combine tension with fluidity and structure with the uncontrolled. As a group of refined studies this collection affords many possibilities.

The recent furniture designs combine the clean lines of contemporary furniture with the character and subtleties of handmade joints.

The hybridised nature of Paul Horne’s practice has become a point of discussion within the exhibition of his work; He celebrates his position and challenges the audience to reconsider the nature of a maker’s practice.
